Post subject:  Tire Pressure for Autocross?
Does anyone have any advice on tire pressure combinations for Autocrossing. I'm running my 1985 Mirage Turbo on Toyo RA-1s. Last Race I toyed around with anywhere from 36-50lbs. I liked how stiff things felt with a lot of pressure but I tended to get more / too much wheelspin.
Stock Front Swaybar, nada in the rear
GR-2s Up Front
Gas-a-justs to go in rear before next event

take a tire crayon, draw a fat line across your tread and up the sidewall a bit, then go drive it hard, turning real hard left and right, and when you check, you should have very little crayon removed on the sidewall.

Basically, it will give you a starting point, race more, and find out what suits you, the car and the tires.

My usual favourite is about 31lbs cold.

Front 31-32 cold, rear 35-36 cold. It really seems to help with understeer running the rears at a higher tire pressure. But its really a matter to trying different things till you find what works for you and your set up.

I toyed around this weekend with tire pressure but still am not sure what I liked. I agree that a little more air in the back helps the rear end come around. My Toyo Proxies ask for 44lbs and I ended up with my fasted run at that pressure although I ran a little lighter in the first couple of runs at about 41lbs. On the test and tune day I made a run with the tires at 34lbs and 36lbs . Less wheelspin but I felt really mushy and loose in the turns.

My bigger problem right now is body roll which I'm trying to sort out in the 1st Gen forum.

a lot of people says one or the best street tires.

My car is GVR4 springs with a coil cut off the front and 1.5 or 2 off the rear and CSM GR-2s. Its on 195-50 15" Sumitomo HTR-Zs. It was absolutely horrible the first time I took it out on a track day.

I managed to get a brand new factory 20mm Turbo sway bar from Vintageparts.net thru our Mitsubishi dealer. Im going to install it with some front camber bolts, possibly the boxed in rear axle mod, and turbo front brakes and see how much that improves the handling of the car.

I'm running Kumho V710 R-compounds on my 88 turbo.

Was initially running 50psi in the front because my gauge was off by 10psi and I thought I was running 40!! Mucho wheelspin.

I ran 40 psi up front last weekend, and it was way better.

Running 50 psi in the rear. I actually got the rear to kick out on me accidentally. Part of that was pressure and part of that was the custom valved shocks in the rear set to full stiff!

I ran the Hankooks last year on another car, RWD Corolla. Can't remember the pressures but they were in the mid 30's maybe?

Great tire, I ran them last weakend at beaverun and autox them the next day. 225 45 15's Very greasy at first but then they cleaned up and I ran them @ 44psi up front and 40 in the rear . They rolled over still with 2.5 neg camber up front. I want more rear bar! Only weak point for me was that I drag raced them @ full boost(430 whp) and blew them off in 4th :o Not fun when your hung over and 1/2 asleep :drinkers:

I was thinking of trying a set of the hankooks so i could try running in STS with either the Mits or the New miata or to double as my rain tires for wet events. Would you guys say this is about he best bet for the money?

As for my toyo race tires I've settled in at about 41 psi in the front and 40 to 45 on the rear depending on the course.

I have a set of the Hankook RS2's sitting in my garage collecting dust. 225/45/15. Got a guy locally who is interested but if not, one of yall's could buy 'em off my hands if you want. Good tread left. Autocrossed maybe 60 runs? I thought they were a pretty good street tire for the Corolla in STX last year. Probably not as good as the Bridgestone RE-01R's though.
