So, stop me if you've heard this before, or if you just think I am crazy? My new free colt failed smog so I decided I would have to put a little money into it. Without hesitation I tore off the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and set the valve lash. When I ambitiously fired it back up it would hardly run. A quick check confirmed that cyl 1 had not fired at all, and cyl 4 was barely firing (checked by looking at the plug electrodes). Another check to the printed out mitchell on demand, and then the troubleshooting began. Almost 2 hours and a few tool retrievals from the other end of the shop later I decided to install the cap at 180 degrees. It wouldnt fit so I simply swapped the wires to get the same result. Much better but not perfect, and I did have the old cap so I could tell that this new config had 2 and 3 swapped (compared to the old cap), so I switched those back. PERFECT!!! What does this tell us.....first, dont trust a distributor that someone else might have installed without lining up the timing marks. What they did was set the distributor to cyl 1 when in fact cyl 1 was on the exhaust stroke, not the compression stroke. Lesson number two, the firing order in the Mitchell on Demand is not correct. I am cautious about making this statement because I cant believe that no one else has ever posted about this, but I will say for sure that my motor fires in the order of 1342 (Mitchell says 1243). If someone else can confirm this then an archive should be created, and if possible, the Mitchell could be redlined in some way? Anyone else have input on this, or am I really just confused about something? Chris |

Chrysler dealer manual and Chilton Dodge Colt/Summit manuals all show the 1-3-4-2 firing order properly. Glad to see that some misinformation is being sorted out. I think that this should be posted in the archive as this would put an absolute answer here for people to see. As it is, people just like myself stumble upon this site everyday when searching for keywords like "Dodge Colt" and the like, and find everything very helpful. That being said, anyone who uses this site like a little bit of gospel, should be warned of technical errors in the service manuals. *... puts himself to sleep while counting numbered sheep, "1, 3, 4, 2, zzzzzz pshhttttttt* What say the people? |

So, if a post were archived in the "4G15 Engine" section maybe it could read something like: "Firing order fix for .... manual" - corrective measure or something to that effect? |

Oh well, the 1-3-4-2 order is in the 4G15 FAQ. But i see, it's time for an update... |

I think 1342 is universal for all inline 4s. 1243 would set up some nasty harmonic vibrations. |
