So I've had the 3g running pretty well, its one tooth retarded in time though--good enough til i can do what i need to.

When i bought the car the cooling fan had already been removed and they were using the a/c fan to cool the car, wired so it turns on when the car does. I can't find the plug for the stock fan anymore, and was reading on here that the temp sensor is just a ground. So when it reaches a certain temp, the ground is completed and the fan turns on.

My question is, if i get a temp sensor (believe the one in car is trash) could i run a ground wire to the sensor plug, and then to the ground wire on the fan to make the fan work? I'd run power to the fan at all times when the car is running, but the fan wouldnt turn on until the temp sensor activates to complete the ground right?

I have already found a spare sensor plug/junk yard sensor to try out, but before i waste the time, does anyone have a better idea? or even think this would work?

Lastly, to be sure, the cooling fan is the one on the drivers side? and the a/c fan is on the passenger side?

Thx for any extra info/help.

Ben

The fan switch goes into the rad and yes it is a thermo coupler the closes at 185 degrees and grounds a relay that runs the fan. I believe is stays closed until the temps in the rad are less than 185 degrees. If yours is bad I would use a junkyard one.

I thought the rad fan was on the passenger side and the a/c fan was on the drivers side. Does you car have A/C?

Oh, and the temp switch controls the low side of a relay type of activation. You can use the switch to trigger a relay, so the high side (power from the battery) can flow to the fan. I would have a quick look in the FSM's to see how the fan is controlled, but yes, a JY sensor should do the trick. Heck, you can test the sensor for resistance while it is still in the rad. There are sensor tests in the FSM folders for the 89-92 at lilevo's FSM section.

good to know. In the end there was only power to the relay when the car was off, not sure why that would be. Since I was pressed to get the car running asap, I wired a toggle switch in, and drew power from a wire that had power only when the car was on, incase I forgot to switch it off there would be no dead battery. I also took a relay from the 98 cavalier before I junked it, and wired it in to the switch/fan as well.
