o2 sensor is in the exhaust piping... you remove that big can (with the filter inside of it).. and connect a aftermarket filter to the hose.. might need a adapter or piece of pipe to make it work tho.

might be the mass airflow if that is the case (im not familiar with the 1.5 setups) then you can put a adapter plate on the maf and the filter will go onto it..

if it looks like this..

then you would need something like this.. but for the 89-92 then just add a filter onto it..

Playing devil's advocate here, you'll probably lose horsepower pulling the stock setup. It actually goes all the way to the fenderwell area to suck in cold air. The "cold air intakes" they sell are usually just a short piece of pipe with a crappy filter on it that will suck hot underhood air into the motor.

You can put a K&N filter inside though.

Replace whatever cheap paper filter is in there with a K&N filter. It's the same filter the 1g dsm's use, part number E-2875.

If you're looking to block more engine heat from your intake, you could get an exhaust shop to bend you a piece of 3" stainless, roll some ceramic on it buy some silicone clamp bands (dont use rubber drainpipe ones trust me). Could cover the filter can in the ceramic as well.

Honestly, though, a 3* drop in air charge temp might prospectively give you a 1% boost in torque. That's less than 1 ft-lb of torque on a 4g15... If you coated the intake and exhaust as well you might get 3 or 4 in optimal conditions with tuning, and maybe squeeze 1 or 2 hp out.

If you can bake your own ceramic and have a friend at the muffler shop it might be worth it for you. If you have to pay full price, save up for an engine swap.
