Post subject:  12 Valve to 8 Valve Engine Swap

Hello,

This is my first post on the forums here. I have a chance to get my hands on a 1991 Dodge Colt for free. However, it may need a new engine. I found an engine from a 1990 Eagle summit. The engine in the colt is a 12 valve motor, but the Summit engine is an 8 valve. Does anyone know if the 8 valve engine will work in the 91 colt?

I did some searching on the forums and found that the ECU's will probably work fine. But what about the wiring harnesses? I know the distributor is in different locations. But it looks like there is a cover on the 8 valve head where the distributor might go? Could i put the 12 V distributor on the 8 V head? I would get the complete 8 Valve motor, with intake and exhaust manifolds. It looks like it will bolt right in, but im woried there may be problems that i do not know about. Do you think it would be worth it to try, or should i try and find a 12 valve motor? The 8 valve motor i found has 90k on it got $230.

Thanks,

Matt

I would personally search for another 12 valve motor.. im not sure if anything would need changed but i think the 12v have more HP..my car when I first got it had the 8v and man was it sluggish and slow.

You can't put the 12V distributor on the 8v head. In the UK these all ran on carbs, no ECUs, so it is very easy to extend the distributor wiring and swap the engines over. I don't know what sensors etc you have on your American spec engines. I didn't know an 8v 4G15 ever came with an ECU. If you want to ditch the electronics I can help you find a 8v inlet manifold and carb from UK, and a distributor with vacuum advance/retard if yours doesn't have that.

I'm certainly NOT an expert, but I DO have a 1989 Colt GT non-turbo (yes, it's original) with a 8V 4G15 w/ ecu. My 1991 has the 12V and NO, the distributor is not interchangeble.
