I just bought a 1992 Colt. I have 2 problems: 1. It wont start right away. I have to crank it, turn the ignition off completely and try multiple times until it starts. #2. Once it starts, the idle surges up then it goes up and down. I will upload a video soon. Im a newbie and please bare with me. I have been in search for an IAC valve that doesn't cost an arm and elbow but to no luck..
I am also in need of an ECU to try. Please help.

4g15. No check engine light at all to begin with.

Just an update, Now I totally disconnected the IAC valve, The car starts right up, idles straight with A/C and load. I drove it around the block but of course just I expected the check engine light came on. Unfortunately, I tried to hook the IAC valve again, my original problems came right back.

What type of spark plugs are in there?
Fuel filter been changed recently?
What is the code that comes up for the CEL? ( search the archives to find how to pull the codes or visit lilevo.com ). Also try www.lilevo.com/mirage/ for any service manuals you may need.
What is your base timing set at?

The temp sensor can cause a weird cold start issue too. Not saying its your problem but worth a try, the sensor is only $15 or so from Rockauto. Be sure to replace the one that goes to the ecu though, not the one for the gauge or the fans.

Definitely check the CTS. If it went bad, that'd cause a super rich condition and the IAC would close up to create an even richer condition, unplugging it would pop it open causing more air to go in with the extra gas creating a decent enough mixture to let it run.

Also unplugging any sensors will throw the ecu into limp mode where it runs on generic settings.

Ill work on those suggestions this Monday along with the parts im waiting for. I will get a Water temp sensor and check the spark plugs. Im thinking thats not all the problem. When it runs with the IAC eliminated (removed) it runs fine. It drives me nuts that I have to crank it many times before it runs. I have changed the fuel pump, filter, and regulator. I need to not spend money too much on the 4g15 so I can save for a 4g63 swap but if this doesnt do well, I will end up giving up on this project car. Im really frustrated. Anybody up here in NW IL? near 6 flags.

Could someone take a picture of the CTS on the 4g15. So we all know which sensor we are talking about?

I'm not sure which one it is, is why i'm asking.

Or i would take a picture my self.

:supz:

The temperature sensor for the ecu is the front one which is two prong, rear one is one prong for the gauge (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
