So last Saturday while browsing the junkyard I came across a 90 dsm with the 1.8 4G37 engine. I was looking at the throttle body and its got the tiny TPS like the 89/90 csm's with the 8v engine. Has anyone tried this for an upgrade for the 8v cars? I'm betting it will bolt right on.

I know that the 1ga 1.8's have a different TB bolt pattern than the 1gb 1.8's. It's not quite square. I'm not sure if the 89/90 1.5 CSM's are the same.

I found this out trying to bolt a 4g63 tb onto a 4g37 IM.

I believe this has been talk about before. Need the throttle body, injectors, and ECU. It worked well from what i read.
EDIT: MAF too.

I know it works on the 12v cars as an upgrade but I am wondering about the 8v. The throttle body is completely different on those. If I can find both cars in the same junkyard I will try it and see.

I will hopefully be trying this soon. I am in the process of trying to get the 1.8 stuffs from the board here. I recently put a rebuilt 89 8v into a 90 that had a completly different throttle body and upper intake manifold on it. Both engines were 8v. It looks like the 90 has the same TB type as the 12v as I had one of those lying around also. So I just sepperated the the upper intake manifolds, and used the one from the 90. Only problem I can see is that the EGR port is blocked on the mani on the newer rendition. So the EGR is blocked automatically, which I have no use for anyways. If I can source some parts soon I will post up some pics!

Sorry guys, the oil pump died on the engine before i could get the parts on, and now its too cold to try and fix that outside. will have to wait.

Well got all the 4g37 parts installed and the car runs better, but now I am getting massive pinging under any kind of load. Looked at the plugs and they show a lean mixture is running. Any ideas? Ive double checked timing, plugs, wires. Fuel is uncertain, and I have no way of checking pressure easily. Pics to come later. Hoping to pass this car on to my brother inlaw this weekend who has no idea of cars. Going to be his dd. Thanks

Reporting back on this! Got everything installed and it really doesn't look any different than stock. Still have some pics around here somewhere, got it running pretty good with some timing adjustment. Its been running as a DD for my brother inlaw for a couple of months now and no problems! They are even getting an avg of around 32mpg out of it! It did feel like it had more power than stock! If you have any Q's as to how it was done let me know and I will try to answer as best as possible.

I've never heard of any of the 4g37 parts being used on the 8 valve. I was going to try this on my old white Colt but I never got anywhere with it. I bought a 4g63 NT and stuffed it in there but I never got it running and driving. I ended up selling it. The only engine that I have experience with using the 4g37 parts was the 12 valve and it only had 63,000 miles on it when I installed them. It definitely added power and I even saw as high as 38 MPG but sadly the engine only lasted another 1,000 miles before it literally ate the piston rings. I suppose you can't really beat the piss out of these old 4g15s the way that I used to beat my old Hondas.
