Picking up a new oil pan gasket tonight after I get off of work and was wondering if I need to take off any part of the exhaust system to take off the old and put on the new gasket. Can't check it myself since I'm at work. Need to have it done tomorrow morning so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Downpipe.

Never had god luck w gaskets.

I would just use right stuff or gray rtv. Ive heard people had good results with napa gasket with a thin layer of rtv on both sides.

Yeah don't use the gasket. I made that mistake on my build because I got a gasket with my complete set. It's been leaking slightly ever since I built the engine, and now it's increased to the point where it really needs to be fixed. Every other time I've resealed a Mitsubishi oil pan I've used Permatex Ultra Grey, and it has worked perfectly.

Use a 1/4" bead of the grey permatex and let it sit about 20 minutes before you install the pan. Start the bolts but don't tighten them, only snug them hand tight. Give it several hours to cure and then torque them down or snug them with a 1/4" ratchet. No need to crank down on them.

A wire wheel in a drill or air grinder works great for removing the old hardened sealant from the oil pan.

4g63/4g61's didn't come with a gasket from the factory. Mitsubishi uses the "great stuff" equivalent.

That's what I use, no issues.

So you guys are suggesting I keep the old gasket and just reseal it with permatex ultra grey rtv or the right stuff?

No. We all just told you that there should be no gasket. The gasket is your enemy. Remove it completely, and seal your pan with Permatex Ultra Gray RTV period.
