I can guarantee your emissions will differ, but only the tailpipe sniffer will let you know how much. Even though things are supposed to be in tune with all the 4g37 equipment, you'll only know once the snifffer is hooked up and testing the car at a roll/partial load and hot idle, or whatever variation of the test they use in your area.

Should he set his timing a certain way for a better burn? In my opinion, I can't see why the 4g37 stuff is going to change much. That's considering also that everything is working so as to have a clean combustion in the first place. But there are secrets to having a better chance at emissions testing, isn't there? I've never had to actually get any of my cars tested. Gotta love Idaho!

If you knew someone who operated a machine and could test the car in a "testing" mode, then you could see real world changes as you modify the timing at the distributor with the ECU grounded and then let the motor go back to regular idle, grounding strap disconnected. This will give you a before and after, but the reason I say the emissions will differ is because of the design differences each motor has and how the original equipment compensated for that. My car just barely passed emissions (the old 4g15 setup I first owned), but the catalytic was probably on its last legs from passing oil through it for a gosh knows how long during its existence. If you whole system is hooked up, you have a good catalytic converter, and you bring the car in hot, that is about all you can do.

Someone here may remember a good timing setup for the 4g37 stuff, because I cannot speak for this part as I did not have to go through emissions with mine installed.

There'll be more fuel going in so it might give you a worse reading because the benchmarks are for a 1.5l and you're using 1.8l engine controls.
