bought this car for $300. found timing belt off by 2 teeth. cleaned tank and replaced pump. it started up after fighting me and i set the timing and it ran ok. i was test driving it and it blew out the exhaust and now it acts like it is flooding. have to hold it to the floor to get it to start. than it will start but it wont idle. you have to crank the idle screw up. i noticed that the engine light has never come on. even when you turn on the key. it is my first mitsubishi. i am a ford tech but am lost on this little car.

also how can i run codes? could i have an ecu going out?

thanks guys

I'm going to guess and say you have at least one bent valve. What do you mean by it blew out the exhaust?

Time for a compression test. If that checks out ok, I'd start checking sensors starting with the coolant temp sensor.

it was running perfect before it started leaking exhaust at the down pipe.

what is the resistance on the sensor? where is the sensor located? is there 2 coolant sensors? (for ecu and for gauge)

what about no engine light?

The sensor with two prongs. Take your ecu out and check for cap leakage and a slightly fishy smell.

No engine light...I would believe a circuit has shot in your ecu. Take apart and look for burnt spots or leakage from the capacitors, just like they said.

Passenger footwell, to the right of the hvac blower motor.

just looked at it and found slight leak on 2 of the 3 capacitors :( . is a small leak still bad?

Any leak is bad, period. The capacitor isn't functioning like it should, and the acid eats away at the surrounding circuit. Sometimes they can clean and fix them, but your best bet is to buy another ecu. On the bright side, you found out what was ailing your car.

If the car still runs I'm betting you can save it. Send it to Dan.

Pmed him. would chiping it benifit me at all with it all stock?

Chipping is meant for eprom ecus, usually a 4g63t ecu which then allows differently tuned chips to be installed (or a emulator like ostrich or dsmlink for constant tuning). While some 4g15 ecus are eprom, there would be no point in doing it for a 4g15.

had caps replaced and still no start.

does anyone have specs on engine sensors? "resistance readings"
