Hmmm... seems like the the 4G15 lump coupled with a 5 speed stick vs. 4 would produce significantly more MPG/fuel economy (varied by driving of course). I was actually looking forward to this 'upgrade'. However, according to below links, the opposite is the case 1.5 w/ 4 Speed Manual: http://tinyurl.com/lje99r 1.5 w/ 5 Speed Manual: http://tinyurl.com/mpm4tt and (for the record...) 1.5 w/ 4 Spd Butt-a-matic: http://tinyurl.com/mzajvv Kanpai, #89 |

When I first swapped out my 1.5 and 4 speed manual, and installed a 1.6 and 5 speed manual, I immediately noticed that my engine seemed to rev higher in 5th than the old one did in 4th. It didn't help that I still had the 13" wheels, but it was what it was. I can tell you that I almost finished a 500 mile trip on a single tank of gas with the 1.5, 4 speed combo. I must have gotten almost 45 mpg that evening. It was from Buffalo NY, to Jay Peak VT. We weren't going slow either. We did it in 7 hours |

Cf, Did you go cable 5 or hydraulic? The higher revs thing is what gets me... I'm searching right now for the gear ratios. 7 Hours!? Yowsers - The little engine that could. Anyone else on decreased MPG w/ 5 speed? By actual comparison or swap? 4 on the floor, #89 |

My 4 speed was cable, the 5 speed is hydraulic, and came from a 1.6 Summit sedan. Yes 7 hours, we had a convoy going too; my Colt, and two red 90 and 91 Civic sedans. The only way to tell them apart was a Ben and Jerrys sticker on one of their bumpers. Our friend met us up there and reported that he went exactly 5 over the limit the whole way, and it took him 8 hours. |

I was under the impression that fewer gears = better gas mileage. Although I don't remember why I feel this way, lol. |

The 5 speed that came with the 4g61 has different gearing than the 4g15's 5 speed. I've had both the 4 speed and the 5 speed (behind a 4g15) and the 5 speed was better on gas. I hated the 4 speed, rev'd high and the ratios just sucked badly, too long for a 4 banger (imo of course, some guys love the 4spds). |

My 91 hatch is a 4 speed and my old 89 hatch was a 5 speed. The 91 seems like it has more pep and it gets a little better mileage. Could be the difference between the 8v and 12v 4G15 though. |

my little 1.5L 8v with 315,000 mi drove across country from Seattle, WA to Allentown, PA getting 52 MPG with a 4 spd cable tranny and a full car load( 2-47"tvs, clothes, etc) at average speed of 75mph(what a long 3.5 days). Alot better than any of my 5spd Colt I owned, but could greatly depend on the persons driving style |

I swapped out my old cable 4-speed with a hydraulic 5-speed, on my 92' Colt 12 valve 1.5 By comparison, think I got "slightly" better gas mileage with the 4 speed, running just a bit lower revs on the highway. The 5 speed makes driving a lot smoother than the 4 speed. A little easier on the clutch taking off from a stop. Not a whole lot of difference between the two, or but maybe the 5-speed is more reliable. My other transmission totally went out at 200,000 miles. |

Looked up the ratios, 1-4 ratios are the same between the 4+5 speeds, 5th is overdrive obviously. |

I have to agree with Incoltino about the first gear; I remember it being smoother to just spin the tires to start off because first gear was such a high ratio with my four speed. Ps. Yeah my four speed blew up twice, but I wish I had video of my Colt spinning those 13" tires while towing my 17' fiberglass boat out of the water. LOL |

Other than how they're actuated, no. |
