My trans is done in my car is anyone else having problems with there trans. I figure the stock 1.5 wouldn't hurt the trans. It's a cable trans by the way.It wines loud as you go threw the gears. It sucks because this car gets 42mpg. My dad thinks it could be the bearings in the trans does this sund rite? |

I would drain the gear lube out of it, see how bad it looks and put some new stuff in it. Might of been low on lube. I would think that some damage is already done though and it wont last much longer. |

Yea, change out the fluid now. AND get another trans ready as soon as humanly possible. My trans did something similar (made a whine kind of sound while the gears were moving), and it blew the diff into chunks one cold November morning at 4am 4 blocks away from my house. Unfortunately cable transmissions are a bit harder to come by than hydro's. Even more so are 5spd cables. Just toss a new clutch at the car while the trans is out and make sure to fill it properly after its installed. But trust me, look into another trans NOW. |

That whining sound could also be (a) wheel bearing(s). Be sure to confirm this. I have blown wheel bearings and I have blown differential bearing in a front wheel drive transmission. The sounds that they make are noticeably different. |

You can change the bearings in those. Mine came apart once, it was so bad I had to push against the shifter to hold the gears meshed in second and fourth. I JB welded the new bearings into the ends of the case because they had spun so badly. It lasted me a couple more years, but was never really quiet. |

I'm getting close to a dead transmission with the whine and it no longer staying in 4th gear. It's a 5 speed in a '92 Eagle Summit. What transmission is interchangeable with the one I got. (I assume it's a F5M21)? |

Most all FWD Mitsu transmissions will fit with a little modding. For that one you may only have to switch the shifter levers. If you switch from cable clutch to hydro it's quite a bit more work and parts. I even ran a W5M33 in FWD mode with a spool in the center diff. It's bigger, but it goes in there with a slight mod to the mount. |

Thanks for the reply, The 5 speed in the '92 Summit had the cable shift and hydraulic clutch. Does anyone know of a chart or link that shows the differences between the Mitsubishi FWD manual transmissions? |
