the 4spd i took out was a f4m21 and the 5spd i put in was a f5m21. to tell was yours is, on top of the bellhousing there is a spot with stamped numbers and letters with the trans still in the car it should be located somewhere under the dizzty on the trans.

all your 4spd stuff will work with the 5spd, i just have to shim the shift cable bracket out a 1/2 inch.

Well, last Friday brought me enough ambition to tear apart the DD after work in hopes of being possibly the first 4G trans swap driving on the road.
BUMP for a 1-year anniversary w/ no known issues! :P

I finished mine today. Maroonmetalic (Shawn) hooked me up this weekend with the tranny. Second gear is kinda iffy so I will play with the spacing on the cable bracket this weekend. Thanks Shawn!

I had the 4 speed tranny that was popping out of gear. Nice to know there is another option.

R.P.M's are slightly higher in 5th gear than the 4 speed.

edit: I had to space my bracket out to 5/8 of an inch to get reliable 2nd and reverse gears.

UPDATE!!!

Well, sadly my 5-speed trans went out this last friday. I was hoping it was just an axle seal, but after installing new ones I reassessed the fluid leak & decided it was in my best interest to make sure the case wasnt cracked.

Found out I blew something up in the differential but was able to drive 15 miles home on the trans
(plus probably a mile of highway/city driving before I noticed the leak!).
Looks like the transmission is going back to the junkyard it came from.
(Keep in mind this trans was in a previous car before it was installed in the one I took it from. Mileage unknown.)

Wow, hard to believe it's been that long since I put the 5-speed cable trans in my Colt. Didn't realize I was the first person to ever do it either... Weird.

Anyways, I used the bracket that was on the 5-speed transmission. I never had trouble going into any gear. I still drive this car everyday with the 5-speed. The only issues I've had have been with the passenger axle popping out. But that has more to do with my suspension upgrades that anything to do with the transmission.

Here's my project thread with more info and pictures for doing this swap. http://www.4g61t.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=29480

This should be archived, I did the f5m21 from a 4g swap and had all the same issues
