Anyone torn down thier old 4 spds? I'm wondering if there is a common part that goes bad? Like a particular bearing or hard part. I've got a handful of these that are bad and have yet to tear into them to see if anything can be salvaged to make a good one or two.

Weird, I tried to destroy my old 4sp and couldn't. 137k miles on it, and I'd drive it like I stole it, redline clutch drops, no lift shifts, she wouldn't break.

Weak shift forks are one to take note of. Mine blew out within a weeks time at around 190k miles.

I've got 4 bad transmissions right now.

I've also seen 3-5 of them locally that had bad transmissions and the owners couldn't find a replacement.

Like I said, just wondering if there is a typical failure point and if it's worth my time to dig into them to make a good one.

That's a 'typical' given issue with any trans, but I'm more curious about other failures. I have 2 that the final drive failed. Is this normal? Typical for high mileage? Or is the shift rail a common failure? Things that have shown up other than syncros.

My 4 speed tore up the bearings on the end of the input and countershafts. When it finally blew, (on a second gear power shift) I had to hold the shifter in gear to keep the gears meshed. The harder I pushed the gas, the harder I had to push/pull the shifter.

One of the bearings spun in the case, widening up the bore pretty bad, so I jb welded it into the end of the case and got about 15-20 thousand more miles out of it. The whine of the unevenly worn gears gradually got worse over the miles, and one day finally... marbles in a blender.

Driving to work the day before Thanksgiving last year, got 4 blocks, and when I tried to take off from a stop sign- BOOM! clunka clunk.

Couldn't get the trans apart, don't know why. But when I drained the fluid out to swap it, I was able to pull a couple gear teeth out that were stuck in the drain hole. And the fluid was very sparkly! We come to the agreement that it was the diff.

Previous owner said the car was making a noise while driving, so he started with simple things, but eventually replaced the half-shafts... But never filled the trans back up when fluid drained out. So over time it wore down, then I bought it and yea...

Still looking for a 5 speed from a CSM.

My 4 spd cable has been a 3 speed for over a year now, driven everyday :D Initially I could hold it in 4th but not anymore. I have yet to find a replacement.....but I have kind of stopped looking...unless someone has one for sale :)

My car would not stay in 3rd gear 118000 miles. I replaced the input shaft bearing (badly wore) and both output shaft bearings. Works great now. The dealership had all the parts for around $70. About a 5 hour job total.
