ok, so i bought a new 1.5l colt since i totaled my old one. When driving the car I found that the car has a bad jolting problem. Also after a while of driving around, the car (at idle, i.e sitting at stop light) will get hot and rev really high. Water is good and there are no leaks. When I'm driving the car, the temp goes back down. When comming to a stop and I have the cluch down the car has a bad idle surge. Has anyone ever had this type of problem? Anyways, i bought the car for 300 bucks. and i was told of the problems but I needed a car and the body is in near perfact shape. I have 2 other engines that i can take parts off of and replace in the new car but I just wanted an opinion on the matter. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.

that temp problem sounds like the thermostat.

the bad jolting problem could be a loose engine mount.

yes thermostat is the cause....but also make sure your fans are kicking on. mine werent working during the summer( 100 degree temps :o ) and driving around it was alright but i dreaded stoplights and drive-thru's. but check your fans first, then the thermostat. and if you have to replace the thermostat go with the factory one. in my expierience with the 4g15, it dont like autopart store ones

On a lot of cars a bad coolant temp sensor can cause surging. A misadjuated ICS motor can do the same. Ive also found that a failing fuel pump can cause a lean condition and cause idle surging. The idle circuit in these cars seem very sensitive.

Inactive fan is usually a coolant sensor switch. Easy to remedy. I had that once. I could run alright; just couldn't sit in traffic.

Sort of off topic, but where is the fuel pump on these cars, and what is involved with replacing it? How much do they run from the parts stores? Any cheap improvements over stock?
