Ok, I swapped over the injectors, maf, and ecu from the 1.8L 4g37.

Runs ok after i get it on the road, but when it starts up, the idle just jumps around from 1,500 to 800. Also, the Check Engine Light comes on just a few seconds after starting up and stays on until i shut it off. It will not go away. It smells like very rich in fuel after just a standard drive down the road, not revving past 4k or so.

I need help badly, somebody please help me out.

Could it be that i need a bigger tb, for more air/fuel ratio? I do not have the 4g37 throttle body, I'm looking for one with the sensors desperately, but could that throw off my ratio by not letting enough air in?

Does the check engine light come on if you have an improper air/fuel ratio?

Maybe it's something with the TPS?

All i know is i want to fix this problem asap, and i appreciate any and all help.

Your probally right about the throttle body. Also, without supporting mods to require more fuel, you'll run rich. If your engine is putting roughly the same power out as a 1.8l you'll run just fine.

Read out the error code. Then you'll know what's making the ECU so upset.

try swapping back to your stock bits until you get that throttlebody.

akdriverjd,
You should be just fine finding a bare throttle body casting because every sensor will swap over to the casting. If you run into problems with the throttle body you receive, then you may have one from the wrong model engine.

As for your idle problem you probably had other issues that weren't readily apparent to the ECU before the ECU swap or this is simply the root of all evils - the smaller throttle body won't let the motor breathe the way it was supposed to.
Like the post before mine, swap back your bits until you have the full system ready to go.
Socrateez is having similar problems due to not having the full system in place and coupling the cold weather together haven't had positive results. I just sent him my ECU to get things back to swell!

Thanks!
I got the ECU and harness all boxed up and ready to go to the post office in the morning.

Doing these mods in the freezing cold weather of 22 degrees for 3 hours is not something I really want to do over again. Granted, I could do it much quicker this time, but has anybody come down to a solid solution? I really dont want to swap them out and back in again, if I can help it.

1) The throttle body is to small.

2) the ECU is messed up?

Those are the 2 asessments I'm getting here...correct?

A very puzzled...

well you know from my thread that i stated points where the car ran weird when i didnt have the four bits in place at the same time.

when I pulled that ECU out if the blue bastard, it was running fine. it was out about two weeks befre I shipped it to you, and that was sitting still in the house. thats my personal guarantee.
hope that this gets sorted out soon.

Yeah joe, i 100% trust you, I'm pretty damn sure it has nothing to do with the ECU...

Probably I need a bigger throttle body with the TPS adjusted correctly.

AND I STILL NEED ONE FOLKS. HELP A BROTHER OUT.

There is also provision to adjust your SAS screw in relation to ISC motor plunger position. I'll post the spec below ....

Chiltons - Colt/Vista 1990-93 Repair Manual
Quote:
Colt and 1990-1991 Vista

1. Slacken the accelerator cable, connect a tachometer, set the ignition switch to the ON position and turn the ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect the connectors from the idle speed control servo and lock the idle speed control plunger at the initial position.
3. Back out the speed adjusting screw SAS enough.
4. Start the engine and let idle. Check to see if the idle speed is 750 +/- 50 for the colt and 700 +/- 100 for the Vista.
5. If not within specs, adjust the fixed SAS until the engine speed rises, Then back out the SAS until the engine speed does not fall any longer (touch point). Back out the SAS an additional half a turn from the touch point.

By SAS screw, do they mean the one that directly adjusts idle. or the other screw on the throttle cam that adjust the point where the plunger makes contact?

I went from a full tank of gas to an empty tank in 4 days with these mods. I averaged 14mpg. I am shocked! Thursday I'm swapping my parts back over.

I figure I might just leave my engine alone for a few years...I'm kind of tired of nothing working out in my favor.

Oh well, if at first you don't succeed...

Sorry to hear about your lackluster bit of progress akdriverjd, but you have to give things some time for all the pieces to make themselves known to you and in such a way as to be beneficial as a whole.

Socrateez,
They mean the SAS screw in relation to idle stop position.
The idle screw is the other one as you were wondering. Wish I had the diag to post but every can see these on the side of the TB's if they are curious.

WOW. You guys need to read what was wrong. I'm a moron. But hey, nobody's perfect. I updated my cardomain site with the progress I made.

And if you don't want to check it out, I fixed the whole problem.
