Hello everyone, Stumbled upon this site after looking for help fixing my newly acquired 1992 3 door Awd automatic Colt Vista. It's hesitating, surging, vibrating and all sporadically! Seems to shift ok, sometimes harder than others but could there be a tranny issue...idk! I will be doing a full tune up this weekend with plugs, wires, cap, rotor and pcv valve. Along with oil and coolant changes, hopefully that cures my problem! If not after some lurking I guess I will look into the ecu and tcm, once I locate them that is! So any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for any help and just for reading my first post. JR |

Welcome! It does seem these little wagons eventually have automatic transmission problems so I'd look there first. Does yours have the 1.8L or the 2.4L? |

Thank you! It's a 2.4l and here's a small update. Warm up the van before work for about 15 mins. Come out to head to work and there's a puddle under the exhaust. Nice black soot floating on water (smelled and tasted). Hop in and she drives great! Small surges but no hesitations or vibrations...so far! |

The puddle was most likely condensation from the exhaust, completely normal. It's amazing how a good tuneup will help out a car. Welcome to 61t! |

Thanks Mechacode! The puddle is there every warm up now. I've never seen this much condensation from a vehicle even once. Especially not every time it sits and idles. Anyway the hesitations and surges are back. No rhyme or reason it seems. One ride it goes great except for a tremble at 2500 rpm with any more than 1/4 throttle. So I'm thinking that if it's still like this after the tune up I'm going to look into the ecu. As soon as I can locate it...could you point me in a direction? I'm kind of stoked on Kiggly slap trans mod though. Hopefully full pressure will help it to hold the clutches more solidly... |

I would start with a PTU also called ICM Ignitions Control Module....Rockauto has them for $26 and would be a good place to start. My experience is a PTU can take out a ECU as it is going out. Welcome to the group, we are friendly so be scared to ask questions. |

Thanks DSMer! I did a tune up and changed the pcv valve and it drives great now. The trans has slipped twice but other than that it shifts very smooth. So the PTU is that a vehicle specific part? I will buy one just to keep on hand for when my ecu inevitably gives up the ghost. |

Power Transistor Unit is what is written on the part for dsms. I didn't want you to remove your icm and find it says ptu on it and be confused. I believe this would be the same icm as the 1.6 N/A colt. It is cheap and a good thing to include in my mind as part of your tune up (healthy prevention for $26). As for the trans slipping that is no fun. |
