Post subject:  Lets talk about gas tanks!

So my relationship with my has gas tank has been a bit unpleasant...

1. It is saddle style, which makes it difficult to drain AND requires fuel return line is required to prime the connection between the two sides.
2. Fuel return line is too small
3. Requires almost half of tank to avoid gas starvation.

So, I am considering cutting off half of the tank and welding on a metal sheet to close it off. But I do not want to do it to my original tank and need an extra tank.

Are the tanks on FWD van different AWD van? (just like on FWD DSMs)

Are the tanks on 5 door AWD wagons different from 3 door van?

Does anyone have a lead on a good gas tank?

Thanks,

Sorry to be a safety nag but i cant help myself.

I hear your pain but be careful welding on gas tanks. There is a guy in my town who died from cutting a gastank.
fill it to the brim with water before you torch it or weld it. You probably know that but its worth another reminder. Good luck on a solution

Being a mechanical engineer for a large corporation, I am very safety conscious. They beat it into us! ;)

I noticed the gas tanks look an awful lot like 2g AWD tanks as they are saddle-type tanks also. Maybe get one of those and modify/test it?

2G tanks are even worse! They are similar in design, but 2G tanks are plastic (van's tank is made from steel) and it lacks drain plugs (at least vans have those!).

Fatfab can make you a custom oem style tank! They made bolt in evo tanks for a bit

Leon, I am pretty sure all the tanks are same. the fwd and awd from 3dr were the same.

I hope you are right, because FWDs are much more common :). But if it is anything like GSX vs GST, they would be quite different ;).

So can anyone with a FWD confirm the style of your tank?

I just crawled under my 92 expo 5 door fwd van... tank is 1 solid one..not a saddle type.. its about 36" side to side.. and 19" front to back i took 2 pics but they didnt come out very good.. if u need a pic of a specific area lmk and ill take some more.

Thanks Steve, that confirms what I suspected.

But I do like that pad idea! Though, I will still have to cut off the other saddle ;)
