Post subject:  AWD Auto to 5 speed - Pieces required?

So just a quick question before I start searching...... hypothetically speaking

I have an 93 AWD auto Vista and a 92 FWD 5 speed. IF I was to want to swap the auto out for a 5 speed, what all can I use off the FWD? OR should I say what must I remove before I scrap the 92?

I think...... pedal assembly, shifter, cables
4g64 crank, maybe the block too
ECU
Clutch Master and slave cylinders

Tired ..... going to bed..... please enlighten me so I can get rid of the POS 92 ASAP.

Cheers

You'll need the long brake pedal bar that runs behind the dash too. And the transmission mount that sits up on top of the trans.

why would you want to go from awd to fwd?.. also the 93 will be a 7 bolt and the 92 could be either 6 or 7.. u need to say what motors are in both.. also you cant just swap the cranks as I think the blocks are slightly diff.

if nothing else..take all the parts u can off the 92 and sell them.

Steve, I believe he's asking about what parts he can use to swap his auto to manual.

That would be correct mirageman. Not that i'll be doing a swap anytime soon but I figured I'd better take all the 5 speed necessities now rather than trying to find everything later. I am just taking the crank and block for other considerations in the future.

So I have most of everything out but it was getting late so it'll have to wait till tomorrow. Still have to get that F'n bar out from behind the dash.

Are the shifter cables universal between a FWD and AWD?

Also, the transmission mount you are referring to is the one that mounts to the inner fender? I ask because on the 92 fwd car the rear mount is attached to the block, not the trans.

Yes, the upper mount that attaches to the inner fender or frame rail. I'd keep the one on the trans too, the one up on top anyway. Heck, I'd keep the trans if it was good. It'll only bring a few bucks for scrap and you might need it down the road if its good.

That brake pedal bar is a pain, wait til it's time to put it back in.

Doesn't his car already have that bar?

I know some people just modify the auto pedal and slap a manual pedal pad on. From my experience the manual one is usually shaped a little different. At least this was the case with my 3g colt. I tried to use the auto brake pedal first and it just didn't look/fit right. I swapped in one from a manual and it was perfect. Not saying this is the case on the wagons, I know Micah kept his auto pedal and modded it. I guess I'd still pull the correct one before I scrapped the car though just in case. They aren't easy to find at all.

here is what I have pulled so far. I have also pulled the engine and trans. Now I need to pull the rear lights and a couple more small pieces and I'll be done.

Anybody interested in anything else on the car before I go and scrap it?

Hi. Been a while since I have been on the forum!

I pulled the entire brake pedal and bar out of the manual donor car. It looked like a huge pain to remove it so I just installed the clutch pedal portion and cut the auto brake pedal to match the manual one. The auto and manual brake pedals looked identical except for the actual part you push with your foot. You can see it in my build thread. Hope this helps and good luck!

You don't need to replace the entire bar. Modify the brake pedal like I did on my car. That's the easiest way. You'll see in my build thread.
