just want to make a post to clarify something that is missing from these forums.
for DSM cars the 5 speed AWD had 3.54 and A/T cars had a 3.3 rear.

its a little different for the wagons.
there were two engines mated to AWD wagons. 1.8L and 2.4L
so there are actually three different rear end ratios.
1.8 AWD 5speed had a 3.9 rear end.
1.8 AWD A/T had a 3.54 rear end.
2.4 AWD 5 speed has a 3.54 rear end.
2.4 AWD A/T had the 3.3 rear end.

I confirmed this info with ring and pinion part numbers and replacemnt transmissions. whats cool about this is if someone wanted to build a quick around town AWD AUTO car you can use the ring and pinion form the 1.8 AWD A/T trans and install it in the turbo trans and use the 3.54 rear end. So if anyone happens to have an auto AWD trans that had the 3.54 rear end i would like to find one so i can use the ring and pinion from it. this coolness also applies to the 5 speed cars. i daily drive an evo 1 with the 3.9 rear. I have never been tempted to swap to USA 3.54 parts. if i was going to build a 5speed wagon i would most certainly use the 3.9 rear and evo 1-3 transmission.

I was getting the impression everyone thinks if their car is AWD it must have the 2.4. when some have actually had the 1.8L. the engines look the same.

Nice to see you back on here, Jerry! That's great info. Thanks for sharing.

I always thought the 3.9 diff wouldn't work with US rear axles in a DSM. Any truth to that?

The 1.8 wagons with AWD seemed to be even more rare. I know Trevtec had one at one time but he hasn't been on in quite a while.

I am searching for a clean Expo for my next build. will happen this year. pretty exited about it.

the 1.8 AWD was only on 92 cars. maybe they didnt sell well?

for changing rear diff ratios its always easiest to just switch the ring and pinion. every outer case is different for AWD cars. 1G, 2G, evo 1-3, evo 4-8, and expo all have different cases but interchangable R&P. .

That's what I figured. I'd love to do that with my DSM, I hate the long gearing. I feel like it'd be tough with an auto because you only have 4 gears, and I know the drag racing guys try as hard as possible to not shift into 4th in the 1/4-mile, but I guess it depends on what you want to do with the car.

I have never liked auto setups that dont use forth. some guys actually do. most put an extra heavy, extra tall tire on the car so they dont need 4th. the extra tall gearing makes it flat boring for a daily... I just plan to reduce boost for 4th gear pulls.. not many oppurtunties to go over 100mph anyways driving the way I do..

Still surprised someone hasn't just put a 1g awd rear end in a fwd wagon. I mean I know they come awd already but are kinda hard to find. Seems lately even the fwd ones are getting rare.

I am considering picking up a clean FWD and a beat up AWD and combining to make one clean AWD. you really need and AWD donor car. there are too many different parts needed. locating everything would be a pain and likely cost more than just finding a broke AWD car. Its not going to be cheap to build. I want to save having to do a repaint on a car. for me that is worth paying 3000 for the FWD car. takes a tremendous amount of time and labor to repaint a car and it never really seems to come out as nice as you want. I repainted my evo 1 last year. cost over 2k in materials. and maybe 200hrs of my time so far.

I am selling my evo IV so I can do this project instead. dont want to convert either evo to A/T. I have to have an AWD project. not easy to part with the IV but the blue car is just amazing at this point. so that one stays.
