I'm looking to turbo my 4g64 16v in my wagon. I can't seem to find any pistons for this motor and the stock 16v head. Everything mentions 4g64 with 4g63 head.

I'm filling out the form for the Wiseco custom pistons and it is asking questions I can't seem to find the answers to. It is asking rod eye width, deck clearance when piston is at top dead center, wrist pin length, dome style, dome vol, dome rise. Ring style for all three rings top, 2nd, oil, valve diameter, valve pocket, pocket depth, pocket angle. I need to find this info or I need to find pistons that fit the 4g64 16v stock head. Any info would be helpful.

I'm looking to put down 300 to the wheels and have heard rumors that the stock pistons are forged. I was looking for reliability so I was assuming I would need h beam rods and a good set of pistons. I was going to port the head too.

I am pretty sure that DOHC head should be a worst case scenario (because of higher cam lift). So those pistons should work for you.

As for rods. Mitsu used the same, forged rods on turbo and NT 4g63, I suspect that 4G64 rods should work fine 300hp.

So the pistons they sell for 4g63 head on a 4g64 block should work despite the fact I will be using the 16v head. I was worried it would hit something or wouldn't fit properly. I'm surprised the stock rods will handle 300whp. But then again this will be my first turbo car. So I am clearly a new one to such concepts.

It's very common for people to use the 4G64 block and bolt the 4G63 head on it to give them a 2.4L engine, but I do believe the bore is larger on the 4G64, therefore I'd think you'd need pistons for those, but that should be pretty easy to come by.

I'm with grndsm, I'd think the 4g64 block with 4g63 dohc head aftermarket pistons would still work fine with the stock sohc head since they're both 16v. My question is why not toss on a 2g dsm head while you're in there?

Also any aftermarket 2g dsm 7 bolt rod will work too, they're the same. It's the crank that's different.

I wonder what your compression ratio would be using 4g63 pistons with the SOHC head?

The 93 Galants had a 4g63 with a sohc 16v head. Not sure what the CR was though, probably 9.5:1.

I know if you put a 4G63 head on a regular 4g64 block with the original pistons, it gives you an insanely high compression ratio, like 11 or 12:1

That is only for the 6 bolt 4g64 that came with the 8v head. The compression will change very little, if any on the 7 bolt 4g64 that came with the 16v head.

Many 7g Galant and 2g Spyder owners have just slapped on a DOHC head w/o changing their stock pistons.

Basically my goal is to have 300 hp to the wheels and be very reliable. So if there is a better and cheaper way to do that let me know. I just thought buying forged rods and pistons for my current 4g64 16v engine would be the easiest and most reliable way to do it. (of course doing a full refresh with bearings etc) Then turbo it. People say i'm out of my mind to do anything to this wagon. But the way I see it I could spend 6-8000 buying another car and be back at square one. Also there is a certain fun factor from all the people wondering what the heck just passed them.

Not true for the 4G64 SOHC 16v head and 4G63 16v turbo DOHC head, they have the exact same cc's. Just plug the holes in the 4G64 block not needed, use correct head gasket, run the correct cam gears/belt combo and figure out what your going to do with the distributor (swap to cas).

I'm not sure on the 8v heads as I didn't do any research on them when building my motor in various stages.

Manley makes 4G64 pistons, I used them to drop my ratio to 8:5.1 from factory for my application.

I've been down the road your going with the factory 4G64 and turboing it reliably. If all you want is a little boost and moderate power, you can get by with 6-8 psi on factory rods/pistons if your motor is in good shape and you have supporting mods. Keep in mind for the 4G64 turbo you still going to have to buy all the turbo parts to make it a turbo powered motor ( turbo parts, fuel pump, injectors, ic piping, intercooler, etc., etc.).

If you want to do more, it will be easier to drop a 4G63T ecu swap and rewire. I started out forged 4G64 turbo on SOHC 16v head, WBO2, safc (8psi). Then swapped to 4G63 turbo head, custom distributor so I could run on the factory ecu/safc (12 psi safely). I did actually run 16 psi for a little bit, but timing was out of whack and blew a head gasket eventually. Now I have done a harness swap, eprom ecu swap, ecmlink.
If I had to do it all over again, I would have went straight to a 4G63T engine/ecu swap and been done with it. There is a reason the majority of people who turbo these vans do the 4G63T swap.
