Post subject:  need some info on what model to buy

Hey guys im wanting to purchase a wagon i found (92 summit auto fwd) but i have some questions reguarding if i should get this, or if i should purchase an expo/summit/vision of a different year/drivetrain.

What i want is a 4g63/5speed swapped van with dsmlink. i have resources to 2g dsm trannys and also a bunch of 1g parts like shifter cables etc.

-what models can i drop in a 63?
- what all do i need to replace if i buy an auto and want to swap to a 5spd? more specifically use 5speed items from a dsm? do i use 1g or 2g parts?
-will i have to swap wiring harnesses? which harness is easiest to swap 1g or 2g?

I need help figuring out which exactly i need to buy!

Thanks
Josh

you want the 2.4 awd. 2nd gen mini-vans use parts closer to the 1st gen DSM drivetrain, 3rd gen minivans use parts closer to the 2nd gen drivetrain.

Unless you are handy with fabricating stuff I would find a manual wagon in a junkyard and get the needed parts to swap it over. 1g dsm or 2g dsm pedals and shifter/cables are not bolt in for the wagon although I'm sure they can be made to work. Mine is a 94 fwd and I purchased it with a bad auto trans, found the needed parts for the conversion and got crafty in getting a 1g dsm trans to work. You can look at my build for pics.

The 92 that you are looking at should have the 6 bolt 4G64 block. If you're not planning to use it you can get some decent money for it if its in good shape.

For wiring thats really up to you. There are two wagons up and running on here with the swap. One guy chose to use a 1g dsm engine harness and the other re-pinned his existing harness to work with the DOHC engine.

If this is just going to be a DD/toy get the fwd. If you are looking to make a race car the awd is the obvious choice.

Sweet thanks for the info. I'm guessing I can get all 5speed swap parts from any summit model, correct? Or are 2g/3G 5spd parts different?

Sounds like I'll have a lil project soon enough

I would hold out for an AWD model...

The firewall and everything is the same so the 5 speed parts will all interchange. Also note that you really don't need to pull the brake pedal. It runs behind all of the hvac stuff behind the dash. You can mod the auto brake pedal and just install the smaller manual pedal pad.

I found two locally and the only problems with them are blown motors but they won't sell them fml. But theyre both at junkyards so I can use parts off of them. One is 5speed awd. Is there space for a driveshaft and rear end under a fwd model?

Thanks for answering all of my questions I really appreciate it

There should be room, if not, this would be the exception to the rule for mitsu's of the period(and almost all cars). But instead of converting FWD to AWD, wait a few weeks and pick up a clean AWD one. Afterwords you can wipe your butt with the money you saved :toimonster: (or buy performance parts). Patience is the key here.

Agreed, if you want AWD wait until you find an AWD for sale. The only reason most csm guys do the AWD swaps is because we only got the FWD 3g's here in the US.

Some of the other guys on the board might want some parts for spares from that AWD manual one though, they are quite rare. Unless you plan to strip it for parts for spares.

Idaho Falls. The guy said he'd sell me the awd out of the car (driveline and rear end) for 225....

So I might decide to hold out for a little bit for an awd model
