Guys, I rarely see this topic discussed. From what I can gather, rear discs only came on ABS equipped vans. And apparently, they were EXTREMELY rare, as I have never seen an ABS van around here!

I know that 89Mirageman send a set of these brakes to Rono, but he hasn’t done anything with those brakes.

Has anyone else done such swap?
Does anyone have ABS/rear disc van at their junk yard?
Any idea of weight difference between the discs and the drums?

Thanks,

My 94 summit has abs and rear discs. From what I can see they look very similar to the 2g dsm parts. Actually if you look up the specs on the rear rotors for our wagons and a rear 2g dsm rotor (not the vented one) they are identical except for the bolt pattern. I will be redrilling my rear hubs for 5 x 114.3 and using my 16" 3000GT wheels on my summit and using 2g dsm rear rotors.

I have heard that they are similar to 2G brakes. But I wonder how they are mounted to the hub? There must a plate that on which E-brake mechanism and caliper are mounted.

The backing plates are combined with the dust shields as one unit. The ebrake cable goes through it and there is a small set of brake shoes for the ebrake that fit into the hat of the rotor. The backing plate mounts to the rear trailing arm with 4 bolts. On the fwd models the hub unbolts and it is round so it can be redrilled. On the awd's the hub is pressed into the bearings and you'll have to use a slide hammer or something to remove it. Also the hubs are not round on the awd's so redrilling is not an option.

I did some digging and apperently 2G-NT guys do drum to disc conversion pretty often.

So this guide should give us an idea of what is involved:

http://www.rcaz.com/rcaz/sub%20indexes/ ... /index.htm

Since they use GSX or GST parts, I just might have most of the needed parts in my Spyder and they will be available after I do AWD conversion :).

Edit: Farther investigation showed that vans use the same rear caliper brackets as 2G's, but different calipers. Van’s caliper has 1G style, compression fitting for the brake line, where as, 2G caliper has a banjo bolt. Aside from this, both calipers appear to be the same.

This also means that our vans should accept EVO8/9 Brembo rotors and calipers, much like they are often adapted on 2G’s!

I have a spare AWD rear end assembly (with drums :(), so I got to play with it. I am pretty sure that rear hub is not pressed onto a bearing, but rather kept together with an axle nut. The bearing comes apart when you take out the hub (the inner bearing race is actually part of the hub).

As for re-drilling, I am not sure that it is out the question. I see what you mean about it not being round, but I think that there is enough material to drill four extra hole (though, I haven't actually measured it). I have inquired about getting some 5 lug rear hubs from Australia/NZ (they have a decent forum for these cars), but shipping from there to US was around $200!!! Odd, because using USPS, shipping something similar down under was around $50-$60.

More topic, any idea if the drum AWD hubs will work with the discs?

On that set that I pulled for Rono I had to use a slide hammer to remove the rear hub from the bearing before I could unbolt the back plate and get it off. There may be another way but I didn't see any way around it. You may be right about redrilling too, I just know they're not round like the fwd rear hubs.

I don't know for sure but I'm betting the hubs are identical between drum/disc models. I know for a fact they are on the fwd's. You just pop the drum off and the rotor slides onto the original hub perfectly.

So, I tried fitting 2G AWD DSM rear discs on the Summit and they almost fit! Center hole and the mounting pattern are just too small, but that aside, they look like a perfect match! I think that machining out the center hole and drilling some holes just might make them fit). But first, I will check if backing plates are still available from the dealer.

BTW, weight wise discs are around 8lbs heavier!

Wonder if the 94 Galant GS stuff will fit or if its the same as the 2g dsm stuff? There happens to be one in the local yard.

I highly doubt it! FWD rear has even smaller center bore and even smaller four bolt pattern.

I actually have a complete set of GST rear breakers, as well :)

I do know for sure that the 91/92 GVR4 rear rotors will slide right over the wagon's rear hubs. So if worse comes to worse you can always fab up a custom bracket and bolt on a pair of dsm rear calipers from a 1g with the built in ebrake setup.

I'm guessing you have your wagon down at the moment test fitting this stuff? Did you ever find out if the rear hubs were pressed in or it the nut in the middle held them on?

I have a spare rear end that I am playing with ;). I am re-thinking the entire "upgrade"... I am not sure that I want a 16lbs penalty...

The hub is held by the nut and the axle splines.

No, DSM parts will not work, I tried fitting them. You need to find ABS van.

so I was able to do the rear disk brake swap well the simple thing is that if you in north america there is really no parts to do the swap
so I had to get a jdm rear sub frame also there the same as 2g dsm so it has drum on the inside for a hand brake and caliper for the stopping
