Summit started out having 10" rotors and single piston calipers. These are the same as "small DSM brakes", as found all 90-91 1Gs and 93-99 FWD DSMs. Those brakes work OK for light autox and even 150mph drag racing duty.

Since I not planning exceed these types of racing, I do not really need to upgrade my braking capacity. But I would like to reduce the weight of my Summit and that is one potential area of weight loss opportunity.

Improving on weight these small brakes is not easy! Rotors weigh only 10.5lbs and calipers are 10.8lbs (with dust shields and hardware totals is 23.3bs). But I took on this challenge!

I already had a couple of old TCE/Wilwood brake kits with BSL calipers (only 6lbs each!!!) with matching 11.7 brackets. So all I needed was some lightweight rotors. Wilwood has some really nice 11.7 rotors (8x7” pattern), but they did not my TCE hats (8x7.625). Searching around, I found out old AEM rotor used 8X7 hats! And what is best, since those replacement rotors for AEM brakes are NLA, those can be found for little or no money!

Original AEM rotors are 12.3”x.95” thick and 15.5lbs! Substituting Wilwood rotors (11.7x.81” drilled), the weight is reduced to just 8.8lbs!

Total weight per corner: 15.1lbs That is 8.2lbs weight reduction over the “small brakes”!

Nice brakes, Leon :D

I honestly love the way this Summit came out and I loved watching it at the track. Can't wait for this season! I hope to see this a lot more. Are you looking at putting in a bigger turbo for this year?

I might put in a bigger turbo at the DSM shootout. But, until then, I want to push the 14b. I might be crazy, but I want to run mid 11's on a 14b, like I did back in 2002. And as you know, I can't go any faster at out local track :(. So if I do reach that goal, it wouldn't make sense to go with a much larger turbo.

My Summit will be 150lbs heavier, but... Ten years later, we have much better tires and tuning tools (DSM link w/WB O2). So I do not think this is completely out of the question :).

I like that you do things a little different than the norm. Most guys would just run all the heavy stock parts, and slap on a bigger turbo to get to 11.5. The tein suspension looks sick, And the lightweight brakes is an excellent post. Good to see a different approach. Im going to do my best to not copy everything you do haha. Im like a 3 year old everything you have i want haha

I have seen a few 4G63 swapped vans over the years. But they really weren't done "the right way", to go fast. I have quite a bit experience of makin DSMs go FAST. So I am just applying it to the van ;).

Feel free to copy anything I do! That is why I am sharing it! ;). Also notice that most of my mods are very reasonably priced!

I appreciate having somebody to copy. Stoked a veteran dsmer took an interest in a van. Mine is never going to be a clone of yours anyways, But the light brakes idea is good knowledge to have nonetheless.

As long as there is videos of our vans beating up on some mustangs and camaros on youtube im a happy man. I dont care whos van it is.

So, brakes and suspension are done on the PS! Next, I have to complete DS, which should be easier.

Last item in suspension upgrade are stiffer/shorter rear springs. I am starting out with 7 passenger wagon seats and cutting 1.5 coils from them.

New stance, about 1" lower than before.

Newly cut front bumper cover showing the only hint something is going here ;).

EVO8 Tein camber plates.

Engine bay. Pretty standard DSM "go fast goodies".

So, today I took a long lunch and went to Granite State Dyno in Kingston NH.

The van pulled 265hp off the street
Then 292hp with open exhaust
Lastly 303hp changing pump gas with 110 octane race fuel

I probably could have gotten another 10 hp from more tuning, but I had to get back to the office.

Keep in mind that this is still 14b, so it starts out at 28psi @ 4k and drops down to 13psi by 8k.

The Volks are 16x7 and around 42 mm offset. I can look it up.
